True Blood Wiki

So I realized that blogs about the finale will be popping up everywhere, but since I have edited here for nearly the length of the series run, I figured I would say my peace. I am still left with a feeling of bewilderment and confusion, but will break down the final episode and my thoughts of True Blood the best I can.

First, I would like to point out Bill Compton and his eternal martyr act. He tells Sookie that she would never be happy as long as he is around, that she needed a family, children, etc. What is with the misogynistic ideology all of a sudden? Women certainly don't need to be "barefoot and pregnant" in order to lead a fulfilling life. Who was Bill to tell Sookie how she'd be most happy anyway? And for Bill to assume Sookie would never be happy if he remained in her life? As Eric once told him "Get over yourself." If he truly loved her, then why ask her to give up who she was? He said he was concerned for her safety, but I don't recall vampires coming out of the woodwork every night, trying to beat down her door for fairy blood. You want to off yourself, fine, do it yourself Bill. You don't ask the woman you supposedly love to shove a wooden stake into your chest, and essentially murder you. I for one, was glad his pity party came to an end.

Once again, another element of True Blood felt rushed, as was the event of the Hamby-Fortenberry Wedding. Frankly, this wasn't needed. Hoyt knew Jessica all but 1 day. He didn't want to rush a family with his girlfriend, but he rushed into marriage with a vampire? It makes no sense. The wedding could have easily been set within the "1-year later" scenes and taken up a minute at most. Why were the writers shoving so much "Bill closure" down our throats? The most beloved characters of the series, Lafayette, Eric and Pam had very little, if any part of the finale. Quite the let down.

A reason I feel the finale was lackluster and a bit, empty, was because there was no true "big bad" to triumph over. In past seasons, we were looking to overcome a huge feat, i.e., Maryann, Russell, etc. We didn't have that feeling of ownership, of "Oh finally!" or "They had that coming!!". Mr. Gus and Violet were no true antagonists, and if the Hep-V vamps were supposed to be, we didn't receive any closure there either. We were just supposed to assume all went right with the world after New Blood came about?

Tara's death served no purpose, other than to kill off Sookie's best friend and a character that had remained true since Season 1, Episode 1. Her side story was not needed, and although I enjoyed Adina Porter's acting, was Lettie Mae really important and crucial enough to have such a large story arc in the final season? All that time wasted could have been used to mold Tara and her future as a vampire. And speaking of her death, why so anti-climactic? I was more surprised at Alcide's untimely demise than Tara's. All in all, both characters got the shaft.

Eric and Sookie? I guess the writers were suffering from the same amnesia that struck Eric, when forgetting that the two had actually shared love for one another? I'm not a fan-girl by any sense of the word, truly I would have preferred Eric with Pam, as it were in the end, but to completely have no interaction between Eric and Sookie? No tease or hint that something beyond the "1 year later" mark could have transpired? We are to believe that Eric is satisfied with still loafing around Fangtasia? In the end, there was simply not enough closure with Eric. Again, too much time was spent on pity-party Bill. I will say, I would have loved a flashback scene with Godric.

Sookie visiting Reverend Daniels... boring filler.

Jason deserved a good woman and a family, his ending was appropriate.

Having Sookie end up with ordinary Joe-shmo, is a lot for me to stomach. Fans invested a lot of their time in "who would Sookie end up with?" Frankly, (if it hadn't been for Nicole) I would have rather seen Sookie with Sam in the end. I think fans would have really been nicely surprised and embraced the idea. Or maybe just have Sookie single and independent, maybe owning her own bakery or shop, wearing a huge, proud smile. To me, she didn't seem all that happy at the end of the finale.

The episode name was "Thank You", but if the writers really wanted to thank the fans, they could have written a better season than that we were given.

I know my critique sounds harsh, and frankly I was giving up on the stories back in season 5, but as I have said, with the show now ended, I figured I'd write one last blog.

It has been a hell of ride with True Blood, but as a loyal watcher, I can finally say...I release you!!
