"Fire in the Hole"[]
In 1986, shortly before the Great Revelation, Sylvie resided with Eric and Pam in a grand estate in France. She was completing her education during her stay there. Eric genuinely cares for her, which is rare in his relations with humans. One night Eric is visited by Nan Flanagan, who admonishes him for not registering or paying taxes to his local sheriff. Nan then informs Eric of the impending creation of a synthetic blood substitute known as "Tru Blood", developed by the Vampire Authority and the Yakonomo Corporation, which will make mainstreaming a reality. Eric has no interest in what Nan is telling him, he is far more interested in Sylvie, and in no uncertain terms tells her to leave. Nan ominously replies that she will inform all interested parties of Eric's response. The Yakuza arrive one night to exact retribution for Eric's defiance of Yakonomo Corporation. The Yakuza sadistically force Eric to choose between his lover and his progeny, both of whom they have in their custody. Eric attempts to offer his own life instead, demonstrating his strong emotional attachment to Sylvie, but his offer is refused, as Yakonomo Corp. wants him alive. Sylvie is murdered when Eric reluctantly chooses Pam. ("Fire in the Hole")
